These programs encompass a variety of activities, including: Lake Superior fishery assessments, Baraga County stream assessments, surface water and ground water monitoring, air and radon studies, brownfield programs, wildlife and wetland management, environmental assessments, monitoring of metallic mining and exploration activity in the Lake Superior basin, participation in the protection and enhancement of Lake Superior, and fish stocking from our hatchery. The department facilitates projects through grants from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. The KBIC Tribal Council funds hatchery operations. Our department is guided by a 10-year Integrated Resource Management Plan adopted by the Tribal Council and Bureau of Indian Affairs in 2003, and by the KBIC Strategic Plan adopted in 2005. Samples collected at the Head of the bay show that the bacteria in the water is at an unsafe level for human contact. I’m heading out shortly to collect additional samples and will be out daily until they are at a safe level again. Please be advised that it is recommended people avoid contact with water that has a high level of bacteria. Please see the below from Western UP Health Department. “Bacteria can lead to infections, diarrhea, and stomach aches. Viruses can cause fever, colds, and intestinal infections. Some illnesses caused by worms have symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, fever, vomiting and restlessness. While protozoa can cause intestinal infections, stomach cramps and skin rashes. Higher than normal E. coli numbers can be expected after heavy rainstorms, especially if large numbers of geese and gulls frequent a beach. Rainstorms wash bird droppings and other contaminants from the beach into the lake water, increasing the amount of E. coli in the water. Symptoms of exposure to E. coli include gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and diarrhea.
